Game modes and XP modes
Standard, Ironman, Hardcore, Ultimate: what each game mode means, and how XP modes change your pace.
You choose a game mode and an XP mode when you create a character in the launcher. They show next to your name on the highscores and on your profile.
Game modes
| Mode | Summary |
|---|---|
| Standard | The normal game. You can trade, use the Grand Exchange and fight other players where allowed. |
| Ironman | You play alone: no trading, no Grand Exchange, no picking up other players' drops and no player kill loot. |
| Hardcore Ironman | Ironman rules, but dying in the open world turns you into a normal Ironman. Deaths in minigames, bosses and raids are safe and keep your status. |
| Ultimate Ironman | Ironman rules and no bank. Death's storage is not a bank: you can only collect from it. |
| Group Ironman | Coming later: play ironman with a group of friends. See Coming soon. |
Ironmen cannot trade, but they get the same starter pack as everyone else. Turning an ironman into a standard character is planned as in the original game, but it will be permanent and the game will ask you to confirm it carefully.
XP modes
The whole world already runs at a boosted experience rate (see Skills and rates). On top of that a character has an XP mode:
| XP mode | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Standard XP | The default world rate. |
| 2x XP | Twice the experience of the default rate. |
| 5x XP | Five times the experience of the default rate. |
XP mode is independent of game mode: an ironman can also be a 2x or 5x XP character. It is shown as a badge on your character, and only staff can change it afterwards.
Characters and accounts
One account holds up to 10 characters, each with its own game mode and XP mode. You may have at most 3 characters online at once, and feeding or boosting between your own characters is not allowed (see the rules).
