Your first hour

New here? This page takes you from the login screen to your first hour of play. Everything links to a deeper page when you want more.

1. Set up (5 minutes)

  1. Create an account and install the launcher: How to play and connect.
  2. Log in to the launcher, create a character and press Play.
  3. In the Mode Setup window choose a game mode and an XP mode. The game mode is permanent, so read Game modes first. If you are unsure pick Standard and Champion (10x).

You can always see your modes again with ::modes. Only staff can change an XP mode later.

2. The first minutes

  • You start at the Grand Exchange, the hub of the world. A guide explains the basics and you can skip him.
  • Open your inventory: the starter pack has iron armour and weapons, runes, basic tools, some food and 25,000 coins.
  • Type ::commands in the chat box to see what you can use. The few commands players have are on Commands.
  • Bank, Grand Exchange and most transport are free. Use the bank booths near the Grand Exchange.

3. What to do first

Pick whatever sounds fun, nothing here is required:

  • Train a gathering skill. Woodcutting, Mining and Fishing are the easiest ways to start earning. Every action gives your XP mode multiple of the Old School XP, so levels come quickly. See Skills and the XP rates.
  • Fight something. Chickens, cows and goblins are fine for the first levels. Every monster's drops are on Bosses and monsters.
  • Try a minigame. Minigames are safe: dying never costs items. Start with the ones in Minigames.
  • Do a quest. See Quests.

4. Your first coins

The quickest early money is gathering something people want and selling it on the Grand Exchange:

  1. Check the price of an item on its page in Items (every item page shows the Grand Exchange price).
  2. Compare ideas on Money making: each method shows gp per hour worked out from our own prices.
  3. Sell on the Grand Exchange. Ironmen cannot use it: for them the item pages show the drops and shops to farm instead.

5. Things worth knowing

  • Trading needs 10 hours played or total level 650, whichever comes first. The Grand Exchange has no such limit.
  • Dying in the open world costs no fee: collect your items from Death's office next to the Grand Exchange. Die again before you collect and the old items are lost. In minigames, bosses and raids dying is safe.
  • Rules: read the rules once. Staff never ask for your password.
  • Stuck or found a bug? Use the red Report button in the game or ask on Discord.
